If you were there you know what an absolutely GREAT day December 16th was. Every person there demonstrated what the holiday is about – giving and sharing. The crew at TurningWheels For Kids thanks each one of you for supporting our effort to put 1,000 of our communities children on bikes, the number one requested gift item according to local Social Workers. And if each bike minimally costs $10 to assemble, you do the math! Because of your valiant efforts, we were able to buy 150 more bikes.
As you might imagine, our crew had some anxiety going into this. It is a feat we have no knowledge of anyone doing so we were on our own to figure out the logistics. At times we were fearful that not enough people would show up and then we were afraid too many would show up! As it turned out – it was PERFECT. You all came and you unloaded 1,000 bikes in record time, built bikes, carried cardboard, inflated tires, wiped bikes clean, transported bikes from one end of the Hall to the other – a tenth of a mile every trip, loaded trucks, and you did it all in record time – actual build start 9:00, last bike pulled 11:00 and finished with 1,000 at 12:00 or 12:30! WOW! And the day went off without a hitch – not one major scar on the new floor (thanks to all of you), every bike out to designated charities, and a room full of happy, joyful people! It doesn't get much better than that!
A huge thank-you goes out to Team San Jose and our event coordinator Mary Vega, the Stealth and Sharkie for coming out. That's a demonstration of our communities support! Don't forget, buy Stealth tickets for the January 5th opening game! A ticket's only $20 and HALF comes back to us. You have to buy your Christmas presents anyway – make it a gift of time with someone you love doing something really fun!
I also thank my friends and team members at TurningWheels For Kids with special mention for Dave, Derek and Deborah. They managed the logistics of Bike Build 2006 and you would have thought it was done by professionals! Of course they couldn't have been as successful if they didn't have the rest of the team to take a piece of the action and just run with it! Trust me folks, we're learning as we go and frankly, so far, so good and 1,000 children will be out on bikes this holiday season. But if you have any suggestions or reflections, please send them to me by email.
One great story – one recipient was perplexed at why he was getting a bike, why would people do what we did yesterday; come together, build 1,000 bikes and give them to children they don't even know!? The person giving the bike to this child responded simply and beautifully – "Because you're worth it"! Isn't that the reason – each of these children, regardless of circumstances deserves a bit of light, a bit of love this season. Thanks for helping us make that dream come true for these children. Thank you for infusing this holiday with a clear demonstration of LOVE. It's what the seasons about!
YOU PEOPLE ROCK!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
Light and Love to each of you,
Sue
